Mastering Stainless Steel Pans: Your Guide to Non-Stick Cooking and Easy Maintenance

Hey friends!

Lately, I've been getting a TON of messages asking about my stainless steel pans—specifically, how I manage to use them effectively as non-stick cookware and keep them looking as good as new. I know transitioning to stainless steel can be a bit intimidating if you're used to non-stick pans. But don't worry, I'm here to share all my tips and tricks! Stainless steel is fantastic for its durability and versatility, and with a few techniques, you can make it virtually non-stick and super easy to clean. So, let’s dive into the world of stainless steel cookware and turn you into a pro in no time!

What Pans Do I Use?

Before we get started, I wanted to share the pans that we use and love! We have switched all the pots and pans in our kitchen to stainless steel and cast iron. The price tag on these stainless steel swaps can be high, but switch out one at a time or as much as your budget allows. You won't regret making this long-term investment in your home and health.

Why Should I Use Stainless Steel?

Stainless steel is celebrated as a superior, non-toxic choice for cookware due to its safety and durability. Unlike some non-stick pans that contain chemical coatings, which can degrade and potentially release harmful substances into your food at high temperatures, stainless steel does not react with the foods cooked in it or leach chemicals, even under intense heat. This makes it an ideal option for those who are health-conscious and want to ensure that their cooking practices remain as safe and natural as possible.

Additionally, the robustness of stainless steel means that it can withstand repeated use without deteriorating, thus avoiding the flaking and scratching that often lead to contamination in less durable pans. This combination of safety, strength, and longevity makes stainless steel an excellent investment for both the health of your family and the environment.

Making Stainless Steel Non-Stick

One of the biggest myths about stainless steel is that everything sticks to it, but that's not necessarily true. Here's how to achieve a non-stick surface:

Preheat the Pan: Always start with a completely dry pan. Heat it on medium heat for about 2 to 3 minutes. You can test the pan’s readiness by sprinkling a few drops of water on it. If the water droplets bead and dance around the pan, it’s ready. TIP: If they just sizzle away, give it another minute or two because it's still too cool. The key is patience in waiting for it to heat up!

Add Oil: Once the pan is heated, add a little oil with a high smoke point, like avocado oil. Let the oil heat until it starts to shimmer but not smoke. This creates a temporary non-stick surface. You can also use butter (which I do!), but just know it does have a lower smoke point and can burn at high temperatures.

Cooking Temperature: Avoid the temptation to crank up the heat; stainless steel does a great job of conducting heat efficiently, so medium heat is often enough.

Cleaning Without Harsh Chemicals

Keeping your stainless steel pans clean doesn’t require aggressive scrubbing or harsh chemicals. Here’s a gentle and effective cleaning method:

  • Deglaze the Pan: After cooking, if there are bits stuck to the pan, add a little water or broth while the pan is still hot. The liquid will help lift the residues. Otherwise, just water and a brush will typically work fine!

  • Use Baking Soda: For tougher stains, sprinkle baking soda on the pan and use a soft sponge to scrub gently. Baking soda is a natural abrasive that can help remove buildup without scratching the surface.

  • Vinegar for Shine: If you notice water spots or want to restore the shine to your pan, wipe it down with a little vinegar after washing.

Final Thoughts

Switching to stainless steel cookware can be a game-changer for your cooking and health, especially if you’re looking to move away from traditional non-stick coatings that can wear out and release unwanted chemicals. Remember, like any good relationship, it takes a little patience and practice to get used to stainless steel. But once you do, you'll appreciate its value in creating delicious meals and lasting for years without showing much wear.

Thanks for all your questions! I hope this helps you enjoy your cookware as much as I do. Happy cooking!

Xo,

Jess
