Switching to non-toxic makeup and skincare has been one of the best decisions I’ve ever made. Not just for my health, but also for my skin, too. For years, I used conventional products like Estée Lauder Double Wear Foundation because of the coverage and longevity. But once I learned more about the ingredients hidden in most makeup, I couldn’t ignore what I was putting on my skin every single day.
Today, I rely on brands like Crunchi and Well People, along with a few other trusted non-toxic staples, to give me the same flawless results without the harmful ingredients. Before we dive into my product lineup, let’s talk about why non-toxic beauty matters and what ingredients you want to watch out for.
Before I get started with everything, here are all the products that I will be talking about in this blog! Click the picture to check them out!
Ingredients in Makeup to Avoid
When choosing makeup, one of the most important things you can do is learn to read ingredient labels. Many conventional products contain ingredients that sound harmless but have been linked to hormone disruption, skin irritation, and even long-term health risks. Here are a few of the most common toxic ingredients and how they might appear on labels:
Parabens – Used as preservatives, they mimic estrogen in the body and can disrupt hormones. Look for these endings on ingredient lists: methylparaben, propylparaben, butylparaben, ethylparaben.
Phthalates – Often hidden under “fragrance” or “parfum.” They’re linked to endocrine disruption and reproductive harm. Look for: DBP (Dibutyl Phthalate) and DEP (Diethyl Phthalate).
Talc – A filler used in powders, but often contaminated with asbestos unless explicitly certified asbestos-free.
Formaldehyde releasers – Preservatives that slowly release formaldehyde (a known carcinogen). These might be listed as DMDM hydantoin, quaternium-15, imidazolidinyl urea, diazolidinyl urea.
PEGs (Polyethylene Glycols) – Used to soften or thicken products but often contaminated with carcinogens. Look for: PEG-40, PEG-100, etc.
Synthetic dyes – Often listed as FD&C or D&C colors (like FD&C Red No. 40). Some are linked to hyperactivity in children or potential carcinogenic effects.
Silicones – These (like dimethicone or cyclopentasiloxane) give makeup a smooth finish but can clog pores and create a barrier that traps toxins.
Safe and Nontoxic Ingredients to Look For
On the flip side, truly clean and nontoxic makeup brands are transparent with their formulations. Instead of harmful chemicals, look for:
Mineral-based pigments – Ingredients like iron oxides, titanium dioxide (non-nano), zinc oxide (non-nano) provide natural color and SPF protection.
Plant-based oils and butters – Such as jojoba oil, coconut oil, shea butter, and cocoa butter- nourish skin while providing texture and moisture.
Botanical extracts – Like green tea extract, aloe vera, and chamomile, which soothe and protect sensitive skin.
Natural waxes – Beeswax or candelilla wax are often used in balms and mascaras to create texture and hold.
Essential oils – When used sparingly, oils like lavender, frankincense, and rose can add natural scent and skin-calming properties.
These are ingredients that work with your body, not against it - supporting healthy skin while delivering the performance you expect from makeup.
Why Crunchi and Well People Stand Out
This is where brands like Crunchi and Well People really shine. They’ve built their formulas around eliminating harmful toxins while still giving you high-performing makeup that actually lasts.
Crunchi bans over 2,700 potentially harmful ingredients, including parabens, phthalates, synthetic fragrances, and talc. Instead, their formulas rely on plant-based oils, botanicals, and safe minerals to create rich pigments and lasting coverage. They’re also Leaping Bunny Certified (cruelty-free).
Well People takes a similar approach, formulating with clean, plant-based ingredients and without parabens, phthalates, propylene glycol, or synthetic fragrance. Many of their products are EWG-verified, which means every single ingredient has been screened for health safety. Also, I love that Well People is easily accessible because I can get it from Amazon!
Both brands prioritize performance + health, which is rare in the beauty world. You don’t have to sacrifice long-lasting, beautiful makeup to avoid toxins.
My Everyday Non-Toxic Makeup Favorites
Primer & Foundation

I wasn’t always a believer in primer, but it truly makes foundation last so much longer. The Crunchi Smart Primer has become a must-have for me, and when paired with their
Beautifully Flawless Foundation, my skin looks fresh and polished all day. I had tried so many different foundations in the past to find one that compared to my Estee Lauder one, and Crunchi finally came out with a shade light enough for my face. I'm telling you, it's amazing! If you prefer lighter coverage, Crunchi also offers a tinted SPF that people rave about.
Concealer
Let me just say it...nothing compares to the Crunchi My Alibi Concealer. It blends beautifully, covers everything, and feels weightless. Truly one of the best clean beauty products out there.
Bronzer & Blush

For bronzer, I switch between the Crunchi Bronzing Duo and the Well People Bronzing Stick. Both are great in different ways, depending on whether I want a powder or cream finish. I switch back and forth depending on what I need/want for the day. For blush, I love Well People’s Blush Stick, which doubles as a lip tint. Crunchi also makes a fantastic liquid blush that gives a natural flush.
Setting Powder & Setting Spray
A good setting product can make or break your makeup. Both Crunchi and Well People have amazing setting powders that keep everything in place without looking cakey.
To finish everything off, I use Crunchi’s Facial Mist as a setting spray. Not only does it lock in makeup, but I’ll also spritz it throughout the day to keep my skin hydrated and glowing.
Mascara & Brows
When it comes to lashes, both Crunchi Mascara and DIME Mascara are excellent non-toxic options that actually deliver volume and length. For brows, I prefer Well People’s Brow Pencil over Crunchi’s because it comes with a brush and is retractable - no sharpening needed!
My Go-To Non-Toxic Skincare Essentials

Makeup is only as good as the skin underneath it, which is why my non-toxic skincare routine is just as important. Primally Pure is one of my favorite clean beauty brands, and their products are staples in my routine.
Primally Pure Everything Spray – Perfect for refreshing and calming skin.
Primally Pure Dry Skin Cleansing Oil – A gentle cleanser that removes makeup and nourishes skin.
Primally Pure Soothing Bar – Great for calming sensitive skin.
Primally Pure Everything Balm – A multi-use balm for dry patches, lips, or cuticles.
I also keep Badger Lip Balm on hand for simple, clean lip care, and use Beauty by Earth Self Tanner when I want a safe, sun-kissed glow without the toxic chemicals.
Final Thoughts
Clean beauty doesn’t mean compromising performance. With brands like Crunchi, Well People, Primally Pure, DIME, and Beauty by Earth, I’ve built a non-toxic makeup and skincare routine that works just as well (if not better) than the conventional products I used to swear by. The best part? I know I’m taking care of my skin and my health every time I get ready for the day.

Jess
