5 Must-Haves for Baby #2

Welcoming a second baby into your family is exciting but truthfully nothing like the first. You've learned a lot as a mom, you know what products you love but at this point, you are curious about what you need to replace and what you can use again. You may already have some essentials saved from your first child, but there are key items that can make life with two little ones smoother and more joyful.

Here's a list of five must-haves for your second baby that cater to the unique needs of growing families. Want the full checklist? Grab it here.

 1. Crib/Bassinet: A Cozy Place to Sleep

Your new baby will need a snug and safe place to sleep. Consider a bedside sleeper or bassinet to keep your newborn close during those first few precious months. This gives you a little extra time and wiggle room to see what type of sleeper you have and what type of space you want in their nursery when they do leave your room.

You might choose a traditional crib, a Montessori-style floor bed, or a convertible bed that grows with your child. Look for features that offer convenience and safety, like adjustable mattress heights and sturdy construction.

Don't feel the need to have the decision made before your baby's arrival- you have time and you can wait and see what type of sleeper you have or how your toddler has developed in the meantime.

2. Diaper Bag Upgrade: Prepared for Two

With two kids in tow, your diaper bag needs might change. Upgrading to a larger bag with more compartments can help you stay organized and ensure you have room for both children's essentials. Look for a diaper bag with easy-access pockets, insulated sections for bottles or snacks, and waterproof linings for those inevitable spills. Styles that can be worn as a backpack can distribute weight more evenly, making it easier to carry everything you need while keeping your hands free. 3. Double Stroller/Wagon: Smooth Sailing for Two

A double stroller or wagon can be a game-changer for parents with two young children. Whether it's side-by-side seating for playmates or tandem seating to navigate narrow aisles with ease, there's a configuration to fit every family's needs. Consider how you'll use the stroller most—jogging, shopping, or strolling through the neighborhood—to find the features that matter to you, like maneuverability, storage space, and ease of folding. 4. A New Car Seat: Safety First for Your Littlest Passenger

As your family grows, so do your needs for safe transportation. You may still have your infant carseat from the first but be sure to check the expiration and that it's in safe working order. Y

If your older is close in age you may find that even if you can reuse the infant car seat, you will need a convertible option once they grow out (or a booster seat for your older one).

Consider a car seat that offers extended rear-facing capabilities, as it's recommended for children to ride rear-facing for as long as possible for maximum safety. Look for features like side-impact protection, easy-to-adjust harness systems, and compatibility with your existing stroller or car seat bases for convenience.

Additionally, look for non-toxic options to ensure you are avoiding unnecessary harmful chemicals! If reusing a car seat from your first child, it is important to check the expiration date and recall history —safety isn't just about features, but also about ensuring the product is current and has a clean safety record. A new car seat for your second baby ensures they have a safe start from their very first ride home.

5. Clothing: Comfort and Style for Your Newest Addition

This was an area in which I learned A LOT with my first baby.

  • Avoid buttons whenever possible- they are a pain! Instead, opt for pieces that have a zipper (and bonus if it's a double zipper that goes both ways)!

  • Look for organic, soft, breathable fabrics that are gentle on your baby's skin and easy to wash. We love bamboo because one size can last several months or even a year compared to the cotton pieces that last just a couple of months.

  • You may need to replace worn-out outfits or sleepwear from your first.

  • Seasonal and personalized items can be a fun touch!

Embracing the Journey

Preparing for your second baby is an opportunity to reflect on what worked the first time around and what you might want to do differently. These five must-haves can ease the transition for your family, ensuring that both your firstborn and your new baby have everything they need to thrive.

If you're looking for more information on everything you need to prepare for motherhood, whether it's your first or your second (or more!), check out my New Mom Bundle. It covers topics like nesting, registry, birth plan and so many checklists for all things pregnancy and postpartum.

Remember, the most important things you can give your children are your love, time, and attention—everything else is just a bonus.

As you embark on this new chapter, cherish the moments, big and small, and know that you're giving your children the gift of each other—a bond that will last a lifetime.

Always,

Jess
